Since 2006, our family has organized a golf tournament in memory of our father, David L. Gale, who lost a battle with colon and liver cancer in 2000. Through the support of the golfers and their families we have raised over $130,000 for the battle against colon cancer.
Once again, we are working with the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital and have established the Gale Family Fund for Familial and Hereditary Colorectal Cancer. This fund will support research to help understand the genetic causes of colorectal cancer. The ultimate goals are to promote early detection and curative therapies for these diseases. As such, some of the Fund’s resources will go directly to scientists and physicians who are actively involved with genome sequencing efforts to pinpoint specific genetic mutations that are responsible for inherited forms of colorectal cancer.
In addition, the Gale Family Fund will contribute more broadly to the understanding of the genetic causes of this cancer by supporting a registry of patients with familial or hereditary forms of colorectal cancer. This registry started in the 1970’s and is maintained by Washington University and the Siteman Cancer Center (http://www.colorectalregistry.wustl.edu/).
Finally, the Gale Family Fund will also support efforts that provide resources and information for affected patients and families, such as genetic counseling, support groups, and lectures. Our family has been dramatically impacted by this disease, and we hope that our contributions through the Gale Family Fund and the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital will be beneficial in the search for a cure.
